18Aug09
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Collected 300 shoots from Dumpling Island (Fisher's Island). Planted 260 shoots at 4 stations along a transect at Radiator Beach. Because this location lacks rocks for anchoring plants, we tried a new method using biodegradable "rocks" made of burlap bags filled with sand. We also conducted a free-planting to compare methods. Did not take photos because bottom became too stirred up after planting and camera couldn't focus.

Great Gull Island (North)
Second planting at Great Gull Island (North). 2000 shoots were collected from Mulford Point for the planting.

2Oct09
Horton's Pt
Collected 2000 shoots from Mulford Point. Planted at Horton's Point. Monitored old plantings as well. Some shoots were lost, but remaining shoots looked bright green and healthy.

6Oct09
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Monitoring of plantings. Set up planting transect line and added two deeper stations. This was because the previous deep stations looked the best so far, and want to determine the max depth before light limitation. Lots of fish were utilizing the plantings, including juvenile sea bass, flounder and scup.

6Oct09
Gull Island (North)
Monitoring of plantings. Some loss appears to have occurred due to tidal movement, though this was expected at this high current site. Those shoots remaining look healthy and anchored.

22Oct09
Gull Island (North)
Collected 1800 shoots from Mulford Point. Planted 1100 shoots at Gull Island (North).

5Nov09
Terry's Point
Planted 700 shoots at Terry's Point near old plantings in 8-9 feet of water, further into cove. Monitored older plantings. Oldest patches (2007) look amazing; very dense and spreading. 2008 plantings are established and starting to form small patches.

67 Steps
Monitored 2009 plantings. Shoots were located, but were very small and hiding under large amounts of algae.

2Apr10
Terrys Pt
Monitored original plantings as well as newest plantings from fall 2009. Some of the newest plantings were lost due to sand movement (accretion and erosion), but those remaining appeared healthy and stable. Old plantings have coelesced into 3 large patches, with 2 of these patches quickly growing together.

21Apr10
Gull Island (North)
First monitoring visit of the year, looking at last year's plantings. Shoots looked great, although were hard to locate at first with all of the macroalgae. See video

21Apr10
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Monitored sand bag plantings and planned for new upcoming plantings. Plantings looked healthy and green. Brown macroalgae was attached to the oldest blades, but new blades were clean.

17May10
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Collected 360 shoots from Mulford Pt. Planted 360 shoots using a modified version of the sand bag plantings (30 bags/12 shoots each). 12 shoots were sewn into burlap disks prior to dive, then the burlap sand bags were placed over discs as anchors. Plants were from Mulford Pt. Planting area was between second and third station. Bags were placed 1m apart in a grid pattern. Also monitored older plantings.

21May10
Horton's Pt
Collected 60 shoots from Mulford Pt. Planted 5 sand bags with discs at Horton's Pt. (60 shoots total) in a sand patch as a test among rock plantings from last year. Last years plantings looked good, although some looked scoured and some buried under macroalgae.

15Jun10
Gull Island (North)
Monitored 2009 plantings. Only a few of the plantings were located as macroalgae growth made locating them very difficult.

15Jun10
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Monitored new and old sand bag plantings and planned for new upcoming plantings. New plantings looked good, very little loss and appeared healthy. Old plantings beginning to put on new growth.

21Jun10
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Deployed sand bags for later planting on the east side of the transect line.

23-25Jun10
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Collected 2400 shoots from South Dumpling Island (Fisher's). Began sewing discs on boat while divers spaced sand bags at 1m spacing grid. 66 plantings were placed between the shallow and mid plot, 66 between the mid and deep plot, and another 66 were between the deep plot and the marker buoy. Also monitored old plantings; all stations/depths looked great, especially deepest.

67 Steps
Monitored plantings and deployed temperature logger. Plants look great; put on significant length since spring. Shoots are very long and have put on several laterals.

7Jul10
Horton's Pt
Monitored plantings and deployed temperature logger. Plantings looked great, especially new sand bag plantings. Put on significant growth since planting (4-8cm roughly). Only a few shoots were lost. Old plantings looked good as well.

13Jul10
Plum Island (Radiator Beach)
Deployed and placed 100 sand bags to the west of the transect line for later planting.

67 Steps
Monitoring of plantings and retrieval of temperature loggers; unable to locate 67 steps logger. Plantings looked very good; growing into small patches.

22Nov10
Horton's Pt
Monitoring of old rock plantings and sand bag plantings from spring. Unfortunately, many shoots were lost since last visit, likely because of sand accretion and burial. Only a few shoots remained, but these looked healthy. A scale up in the spring may be necessary.
