Suffolk County

Suffolk County generously provides a portion of the funding for the Habitat Restoration Specialist position and all the funding for the facilities that support and house CCE's habitat restoration program. Without this core support, none of the work described herein would be possible. We greatfully appreciate the support provided by the Suffolk County Executive, Steve Levy, First District Legislator Edward P. Romaine and the entire Suffolk County Legislature.

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation

NFWF funding has been critical to the operation expansion of eelgrass restoration activities at CCE. In recent years, NFWF has funded two projects in Long Islnad Sound resulting in the creation of a 2.5 acre site as well as multiple test plantings along long island's north shore. Work at the test sites has lead to the initiation of additional large-scale planting projects. These NFWF grants were funded through the Long Island Sound Futures Fund with funding from the following: Long Island Sound Study, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Restoration Center Community-Based Restoration Partnership, Restore America’s Estuaries and Shell Marine Habitat Program.

Peconic Estuary Program

The Peconic Estuary Program

The Peconic Estuary Program has supported CCE's Eelgrass Restoration and Monitoring since its inception. Beginning in 1996 with the funding of a demonstration project in the Town of East Hampton, the PEP has continued to fund long-term monitoring of SAV since 1997. The PEP currently funds restoration efforts in the Peconics as well.

Natural Resources Conservation Service

Natural Resources Conservation Service

The NRCS has provided funding for eelgrass restoration efforts in the Peconic Estuary during the 2006 and 2007 field seasons.  This funding has enabled us to create two separate 1-acre meadows at two sites within the Peconic Estuary.

Save the Sound

Save the Sound

Save the Sound has provided funding to complete the Long Island Sound Eelgrass Restoration Project Phase I at St. Thomas Point in Southold (see NFWF above). This funding was critical in ensuring that the work during 2005 and 2006 was completed as planned.

STIDD

STIDD

STIDD Systems was founded in 1991 as a manufacturer of Government and Commercial Marine Seating. In 1998 it began development of its first Military Submersible. Today its customers include the United States Marine Corps, Special Operations Command, Coast Guard and Coalition Forces. During summer 2008, CCE will be testing the effectiveness of one of STIDD's marine submersibles (DPD) for use in eelgrass monitoring and mapping.

Long Island Community Foundation

Long Island Community Foundation

The LICF provided two successive grants to our eelgrass restoration program that made it possible to continue and expand operations at a time when the program was just beginning to grow. LICF's funding of staff time allowed for other grant dollars to go towards the construction of a dedicated eelgrass nursery at Cedar Beach in Southold, NY. Without LICF's support, this greenhouse would not have been possible. This same funding made it possible to expand restoration efforts to new areas of the estuary that lead to the development of an entirely new method of planting eelgrass (i.e., Buoy Deployed Seeding).

New York State Environmental Protection Fund

The State of New York through the EPF has provided core funding for the construction of the eelgrass nursery. This funding in combination with the LICF money allowed for a considerable expansion of restoration efforts in the region.
Currently EPF money is being used to fund an eelgrass and bay scallop restoration initiative.

Local Municipalities

Old Field The Village of Old Field has been very supportive of eelgrass restoration efforts at Old Field Point allowing us access to the shoreline for test plantings.

Shelter Island - The Town of Shelter Island has been very cooperative in allowing for various experimental and large-scale eelgrass planting efforts to take place in Town waters.

Southampton - CCE has worked cooperatively with the Town of Southampton, and in particular the Town Trustees, regarding issues relating to the monitoring and restoration of eelgrass for several years. Sag Habor Cove provided the first test site for the Buoy Deployed Seeding Method developed by CCE.

Southold - Southold Town and the Southold Town Trustees have been very supportive and cooperative regarding every aspect of CCE's eelgrass restoration and management program. CCE and Southold Town have partnered on several grants that allowed for the eelgrass program to develop into what it is today.
